Complementary Course Guide

Complementary Course Guide

Choose these courses with care:

  • Selected Grade 10 courses serve as direct prerequisites for advanced Grade 11 and 12 options, including specialized pathways in PVA (Performing and Visual Arts) and CTS.
  • Complementary courses carry 5 credits, matching the weight and value of core academic subjects toward your diploma.
  • Completing these courses satisfies key requirements for the Alberta High School Diploma.
  • Once course requests are submitted, schedule adjustments are difficult and cost you time in your chosen courses.

Consider the following questions to build a balanced, meaningful timetable:

  • Where did you thrive during middle or junior high school?
  • What artistic, athletic, or technical fields have you not yet explored?
  • Which practical skills align with your long-term post-secondary or career goals?
  • How will your schedule balance rigorous academics with creative studios, health and fitness, and hands-on learning?

Course Selection Guidelines

Central Memorial High School expects all students to carry a full course load to take full advantage of our diverse academic pathways, Performing and Visual Arts (PVA) program, and CTS opportunities. A full course load is defined as follows:

  • Grade 10: Minimum 8 courses
  • Grade 11: Minimum 7 courses
  • Grade 12: Minimum 6 courses (3 per semester)

*Note: Counselor and administrative approval is required for any modified program. The PVA program also requires a successful interview or audition. Find out more here.

Timetable Commitment & Course Changes

Central Memorial is committed to maximizing educational resources for all students. Our master timetable is built directly around your course requests. Once your selections are finalized, you are expected to honour that commitment and actively work toward success in every scheduled class.

Course drops are considered only under extraordinary circumstances and require formal approval from both a guidance counselor and school administration. (Deadline dates apply; AP course adjustments may follow distinct timelines set by the AP coordinator.) If needed, a written appeal may be submitted to your Assistant Principal following a counselor consultation.

Course Repeat & Upgrade Policy

Students receive one placement opportunity per course. If a student does not pass a course, repeating it at Central Memorial is subject to space availability and cannot be guaranteed. Students wishing to upgrade a passing grade must complete the course through CBE-Learn, Chinook Learning Services, or approved distance learning platforms. Appeals regarding course repeating may be directed to administration.

Tutorial Attendance

Tutorial time is an integral part of academic success at Central Memorial. Teachers use this dedicated time to support learning and may request student attendance. If you receive requests from multiple teachers for the same period, you must work with those teachers to develop a plan that supports your success.
