PVA Dance Program Overview
PVA Dance is a three-year enriched program for students looking to grow as dancers in a creative, supportive and technically challenging environment. Through daily dance classes, students develop their technique, artistry and confidence while discovering their unique creative voice.
Led by experienced dance educators, guest artists and choreographers, students explore a wide range of dance styles, including Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop, West African, Latin Fusion, Body Percussion, Dance Composition, and more. Learning extends beyond technique to include dance history, choreography, anatomy and music appreciation.
Program Highlights:
- Daily Dance Training: One dedicated dance class every school day.
- 48 High School Credits: Students graduate with credits earned across locally developed curriculum in Dance (15), Ballet (15/25/35), Jazz (25/35), Contemporary (25/35), Dance Composition (35) and Leadership in the Arts (35) courses.
- Audition-Based Placement: Students are placed in classes that reflect their technical abilities and previous dance experience.
- Artistic Opportunities: Students explore connections across artistic disciplines, work with guest professionals and engage with Calgary's dance community.
- Balanced Commitments: We recognize that many students balance their school experience with dance training and other activities outside of school. With this in mind, additional extracurricular commitments are kept to a minimum. Students are welcome and encouraged to continue training at a studio, but it is not a requirement. The PVA Dance program provides comprehensive training that can stand on its own, supporting each dancer's individual goals, growth, and future aspirations.
- Unique Community Partnerships: PVA Dance is proud of its long-standing relationships with local dance organizations, including Decidedly Jazz Danceworks and illFX. These partnerships, along with collaborations with other professional artists and organizations, enrich our program by connecting students with industry professionals, diverse dance styles, and unique learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom.
PVA Dance encourages students to challenge themselves, build meaningful connections and develop the skills and confidence to pursue their artistic goals, both in and beyond high school.
To be considered for our specialized PVA program, students are required to apply online and audition/interview with our staff.

Dance Fusion | January & June
Held twice a year, Dance Fusion brings together PVA Dance students to celebrate their progress through a variety of dance styles and choreography. These showcases highlight student learning and creativity in a supportive environment.
Dance Central | March
Our biggest dance production of the year—and a show unlike any other!
Each March, Dance Central brings the PVA Dance program together for an unforgettable celebration of movement, creativity, and artistry. Featuring dynamic choreography and diverse dance styles, this large-scale production showcases the dedication, growth, and talent of our dancers.
But what makes Dance Central truly special is the energy and passion our students bring to the stage. Their love of dance shines through in every moment, creating an experience that goes beyond choreography and technique.

More Opportunities to Shine!
Beyond our three annual productions, students may participate in school events, community celebrations, and special showcases throughout the year. These may include pep rallies, Gala of the Arts performances, Open House, as well as collaborative performances with other PVA disciplines.
At PVA Dance, the stage is more than a destination. It's a place to grow, connect, and bring creativity to life!
Dance FAQ
What happens during the interview and audition process?
The PVA Dance application process has two parts:
1. Interview: A 15-minute conversation between the applicant, their parent/guardian and our PVA Dance teachers. We want to learn about your passion for dance, your commitment to training and your goals. This is also a great opportunity for families to ask questions and discover if PVA Dance is the right fit.
2. Group Audition: Students participate in a group dance audition where we assess technical skills, movement ability and readiness for the program. Successful applicants are placed in appropriate classes in September based on their experience and technical abilities.
Do I need experience in multiple dance styles to apply?
Not at all! Dancers with at least three years of experience in one dance style are welcome to apply. Our program builds on your existing training while introducing you to new styles, techniques and creative opportunities.
Will PVA Dance require a lot of after-school time?
We know many of our students train at dance studios outside of school, so we keep additional commitments to a minimum.
Our main after-school commitment is rehearsals and performances for Dance Central, our annual production in March. Students can also expect occasional homework and assignments as part of their coursework.
How many dance classes will I take?
PVA Dance students take one dance class every school day for all three years of high school.
Throughout the program, students earn credits in a variety of courses, including Dance, Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary and Dance Composition. Students also complete Dance Composition 35 in Grade 11 or 12, depending on their timetable.
Can I still complete all the courses needed for graduation and university?
Absolutely! PVA Dance is designed to fit within Alberta's high school graduation requirements.
Students take their required academic courses alongside their daily dance class. Our guidance counsellors and teachers help students plan their schedules to support graduation requirements and future post-secondary goals.
Some specialized post-secondary programs have additional admission requirements, so early course planning is encouraged.
What if I miss the group audition?
You may still have an opportunity to apply! Late applications may be considered depending on program availability.
Students who miss the group audition may be asked to prepare a one-minute solo in a dance style of their choice as part of an alternate audition process.
