SOCIAL STUDIES
Social Studies (SS) courses explore relationships among individuals in various societies and between societies. Students will examine cultural, economic, ethical, legal, political and religious issues that communities face. These courses focus on understanding: who am I, what kind of society do I want, and how do I and others shape our world? The goal of the Alberta Social Studies program is to encourage students to take a knowledgeable and active role as citizens of Canada and the World.
Social Studies Course Sequences (Each course is 5 credits)
Every student must complete a 30 level Social Studies course to satisfy graduation criteria. Students should enroll in the course level that best suits a student’s learning needs and post-secondary goals.
Social Studies 10-1, 20-1 and 30-1
These are academically rigorous courses designed for students who are interested in how society functions and in developing academic skills necessary for success in post-secondary university studies. Students will examine historical and contemporary aspects and relationships among citizenship, identity and:
- globalization in 10-1
- nationalism in 20-1
- ideologies in 30-1
Social Studies 10-2, 20-2 and 30-2
Focusing on practical skills as citizens, students will explore historical and contemporary aspects and relationships among citizenship, identity and:
- globalization in 10-2
- nationalism in 20-2
- ideologies in 30-2

Advanced Placement – European History

Study the cultural, economic, political, and social developments that have shaped Europe from c. 1450 to the present. You’ll analyze texts, visual sources, and other historical evidence and write essays expressing historical arguments.
There are no official Advanced Placement prerequisite courses for AP European History. However, this is an intense survey course so prospective students should not only love history and academic work but also have strong work ethic and study skills to keep up with the pace of the course. Students will need to complete Social Studies 20-1 prior to the commencement of this course.
World Religions (3 credit course - offered in conjunction to Social Studies 35 – AP European History)
In religious studies, students experience a number of cultural, historical and contemporary issues from a religious point of view, and through the study of religion as a separate discipline to “develop a philosophy based upon values conducive to ethical and moral behaviour and reflected in an understanding of human worth.
