Good Evening CMHS Parents, Caregivers, Students and Guardians,

One of the ways we support the development of future teachers at Central Memorial High School is by welcoming student teachers into our classrooms. You may notice these aspiring educators around the building, learning alongside our staff and students.

A practicum is an important bridge between university learning and the real world of teaching. It is where future teachers begin putting theory into practice, planning lessons, building relationships with students, learning classroom management, adapting when things don’t go as planned, and reflecting on their experiences. Just as importantly, it is often where they discover their own voice as an educator and realize that teaching really is what they want to do.

At CMHS, certified professional teachers volunteer to mentor and guide these future educators. This provides student teachers with the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals while becoming part of the life of a school, attending meetings, interacting with students and staff, and seeing firsthand the many ways a school community works together to support young people.

There is also a benefit for our students. Having student teachers in our classrooms brings additional adults, new ideas, energy, and perspectives into our learning community. It also gives our students an opportunity to see that teaching is a profession built on relationships, continuous learning, and a genuine commitment to helping others.

We recently welcomed a group of student teachers who are early in their education journey. Their Director of Field Experience sent us a wonderful message following their experience at CMHS:

“Thank you so much for welcoming us to your learning community! Our first group had such wonderful experiences and are impressed with the innovative and inclusive ways your teachers support learners. They were speaking so highly of the ways that barriers to learning are removed and were very enthused to see a high school setting. We are so grateful to partner with you!”

As I spoke with these students, they all had a grin from ear to ear. Their excitement about becoming teachers was wonderful to see. When I reflect on my own practicum experiences, I can honestly say that some of the most important lessons I learned as a future teacher happened during those experiences. It was where the ideas I had learned in university became real, and where I began to understand the privilege and responsibility of working with young people.

We are proud to play a small part in helping develop the next generation of educators. The teachers who mentor student teachers are not only supporting today's learners; but they are also helping shape the teachers who will inspire and support tomorrow's students.

That is something pretty special about our CMHS community. Have a great weekend.
