Good Evening CMHS Parents, Caregivers, Students and Guardians,

What a great start to our athletics season at Central Memorial! I have really enjoyed getting out to watch some soccer, football, and volleyball, and I look forward to seeing as many of our athletes compete as possible throughout the season. There is something truly special about watching our students challenge themselves, support one another, and experience the power of play. Play is about so much more than the activity itself. It energizes us, enlivens us, eases our burdens, and renews our sense of optimism. It opens us up to new possibilities and helps us discover what we are capable of.

Last weekend, I had the privilege of attending a University of Calgary Field Hockey alumni event. It brought back a ton of memories of playing and coaching, and it was wonderful to reconnect with so many teammates and former varsity athletes I had coached. One of the things that stood out was how many of us went on to careers in education, becoming teachers and administrators. Others became judges, doctors, lawyers, and nurses. As many of you know, our very own Ms. Wishart is now the head coach of the University of Calgary Dinos Field Hockey team! Something that started out as play for so many of us turned into rewarding careers.

I was also fortunate to connect with some of the older players and coaches who played an important role in my life. It reminded me of the lasting impact that sport, mentorship, and relationships can have on young people. Sports make a tremendous difference in the lives of those fortunate enough to participate.

During the strike last year, my nephew asked me what he should be doing academically to support his six- and nine-year-old children. My response was simple: Have them read books and let them play. Play lies at the core of creativity and innovation. It helps us develop problem-solving skills, build confidence, and see possibilities that we might otherwise miss. There is also something valuable about working and playing with our hands {which can be seen in our art and CTS courses). These experiences can help us learn to see solutions and approach challenges in different ways.

At CMHS, we value the many pathways through which our students learn and grow. Whether it is in the classroom, on the stage, in our Career and Technology programs, or on the athletic field, we want our students to discover their strengths, develop resilience, and build meaningful connections.

As we head into the weekend, I hope our students and families find some time to get outside, enjoy a game, participate in something they love, or simply make room for a little play. These experiences contribute to our well-being and help us return to the week ahead energized and ready to learn.

Thank you to our families for your continued partnership in supporting our students. We appreciate all that you do to help our young people flourish.

Have a wonderful weekend, Rams!
