Good Evening CMHS Parents, Caregivers, Students and Guardians,

There is always lots happening at Central Memorial High School, and this week I want to share an amazing learning opportunity happening in PVA. We are thrilled to welcome Wild Mint Arts to CMHS. Vee, Elijah, and Kenna are Indigenous artists who will be working with our PVA students across disciplines to explore collaboration, develop new artistic language, and learn about the stories of the land on which we learn.

This is a pretty special opportunity. Our students will be challenged to work across artistic disciplines, classes, and cultures, ultimately bringing their learning together during a visit to North Glenmore Park. The artists themselves work across visual art, textiles, sound, movement, and other forms of expression rather than limiting themselves to traditional artistic boundaries.

During their introductory presentation to our students and staff, one of the artists shared that his mother is the only person left from his nation who is fluent in his Indigenous language, and he worries about all that knowledge that may be lost when she is gone. As we know, language carries culture. It carries stories, history, relationships, knowledge, identity, and unique ways of understanding the world. So much is lost when a language is lost.

Our students also heard about the impacts of the Sixties Scoop, generational trauma, and experiences with racism, and how these experiences find their way into the artists' work and their understanding of language, identity, and culture. These are important conversations, and they are not always easy ones. They are also conversations that help us better understand the world and the people with whom we share it.

On top of personal stories that will enhance our staff and students' learning, this project will also give all of us an opportunity to explore some of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action. This cross-curricular activity will allow us to be thoughtful about the responsibility that comes with learning from Indigenous artists and cultures. As our amazing teacher Mr. Mailman stated, "We need to ensure that we are learning respectfully and not appropriating stories, knowledge, or artistic practices that are not ours to take."

A huge thank you to Mr. Adam Mailman and our PVA team, as well as the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, whose grant support has helped make this experience possible. I am excited to see where this experience takes our students. Sometimes the best learning happens when we step outside the usual boxes, try something new, and allow ourselves to be challenged.

I am grateful that our students have so many opportunities to challenge themselves and to do something new, meaningful, and fascinating!
