The Ram Reminder - March 9 - 13, 2026
Good Evening CMHS Parents, Caregivers, Students and Guardians,
March is always a favourite month of mine for many reasons. The days get longer, the weather begins to warm, and Spring Break is just around the corner. March is also Women’s Empowerment Month, and this weekend, on International Women's Day, Sunday, March 8, we have an opportunity to recognize the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and reflect on the progress that has been made.
I was reminded of the growing respect and appreciation for women in sport after the recent 2026 Winter Olympics, when many people around the world celebrated the success and professionalism of the US women's national ice hockey team and the way they carried themselves both on and off the ice, especially after the US men's team locker room debacle. Moments like these highlight how far women’s sports have come and how much visibility and respect they are gaining.
On my own women’s hockey team, I am fortunate to play alongside many younger and incredibly talented players who can skate and stickhandle with remarkable skill. After games, when we chat and analyze how things went, they often reflect on the many years they spent in competitive girls’ hockey programs and with dedicated coaches who helped them develop their skills. When I shared that, when I was young, girls’ hockey wasn’t even an option because only boys had teams; they looked at me with disbelief. Even getting hockey equipment was different. The option of getting hockey skates as a girl was unheard of. Girls had to skate in white figure skates with toe picks on the outdoor community rinks. I still remember finally getting my first pair of second-hand hockey skates and having to relearn how to skate without the picks.
I feel fortunate to know personally many of the women who helped push for the development of girls’ hockey in Calgary and beyond. Looking back now, the growth of women’s sports is truly remarkable. One example close to my family is my cousin, Erica Kromm, who played hockey at Brown University, went on to play professionally with the Calgary Inferno, and is now coaching at Yale University. Many of the athletes she works with today are continuing their careers in the Professional Women's Hockey League.
Research continues to show that participation in sport has a powerful impact on girls and women. It is linked to increased confidence, leadership skills, expanded job opportunities, higher earning potential, and a greater likelihood of pursuing graduate-level education.
As we approach International Women’s Day this weekend, I encourage you to take a moment to celebrate the women in your lives and reflect on the impact they have had on you, your family, and our community. Their contributions, both big and small, continue to shape a stronger and more inclusive future for everyone.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Anne Kromm
