Good Evening CMHS Parents, Caregivers, Students and Guardians,

May 1st carries a great deal of meaning for many people around the world and within our own community. Growing up with a Finnish mom, this day was always marked by celebrating Vappu, a traditional festival welcoming the arrival of spring. Like many of you, I find myself hoping that spring has truly arrived, and that winter is finally tucked away for a while. That said, as Calgarians, we know that Mother Nature tends to follow her own timeline.

I was recently reminiscing with a colleague about the memorable May 14th snowstorm of 1986 that swept across Alberta. It toppled power lines, closed schools, and brought much of Calgary and southern Alberta to a standstill. Despite the chaos, I still made it to school. Missing school simply wasn’t an option in my household. With city buses not running, my dad dropped me off at Crescent Heights High School on his way downtown to work. It did however turn out to be a pretty great day, as only a handful of students made it in, and I spent most of the day shooting hoops in the gym.

As the weather begins to warm and the excitement of summer grows, we ask for your continued support in speaking with your children about finishing the school year in a positive and respectful way. Expectations for student behaviour remain high, and it is important that students attend their classes regularly. There is still significant learning ahead as teachers work to complete course outcomes and prepare students for final assessments.

May 1st is also an important day here in Alberta, as it marks Tsuut’ina Day, celebrated annually by the Tsuut’ina Nation. This day honours their culture, language, and history, and marks the beginning of a new year. It is a celebration of strength and resilience and serves as an important reminder of the ongoing work of reconciliation. Recognizing days like this helps foster greater understanding, respect, and awareness as we continue to learn together and build stronger relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we move through this important time of the school year.

Enjoy your weekend.
