Good Evening Parents, Caregivers, Students and Guardians,
I can’t rave enough about how incredible the trip to Austria and Germany was with our Strings Program last week. The experience was nothing short of extraordinary—rich in both musical and historical significance. As a former Social Studies teacher, I found the connections to what our students learn in Grades 10–12 Social Studies to be profoundly impactful. Walking through historical landmarks that are tied directly to the Alberta Program of Studies outcomes brought the past to life in such a meaningful way for our students.
Musically, the experience was equally exceptional. From the professional performances we attended to the ones our students performed in; every moment was filled with inspiration. One particularly powerful memory was working with guest conductor Michael Lessky of the Vienna Youth Orchestra. After listening to our students play and making a few adjustments, he looked at them and said, "That was perfect."
That moment spoke volumes—not only about the level of our Strings Program but also about the incredible talent our students bring to the stage. For context, Maestro Lessky founded the Vienna Youth Philharmonic Orchestra in 1997, which has since become known as Austria’s “elite orchestra of the next generation.” To receive such high praise from him was truly moving.
Our students had multiple opportunities to perform, and it was so heartwarming to see how deeply the audiences appreciated their music. I don’t think they expected to hear such precision and skill from high school students—especially ones from Canada! After the performances, many audience members stayed behind just to speak with our students and express their gratitude for the music they had worked so hard to master.
It was a whirlwind tour filled with walking (lots and lots of walking!), learning, laughing, dancing, singing, and making memories that will last a lifetime. Moving a full-sized harp in and out of buildings, on and off of our charter bus, and up and down hotel elevators into hotel rooms, was just one of them. As principal, I especially valued the chance to spend quality time with our students—something I truly miss not being in the classroom every day.
As much as I love to travel and explore the world, there’s something special about coming home. It’s good to be back.
Wishing you all a restful and joyful Easter Long Weekend.
Anne Kromm
Principal
