Dear Parents, Guardians, Caregivers, and Students

I hope this message finds you well as we continue our journey through this school year. I wanted to share some exciting insights and highlights from the CBE High School Student Well-being Symposium that I was fortunate to attend last week, along with seven of our amazing student delegates, our graduation coach Ms. Best and our amazing teacher, Ms. Tatulis. Ms. Tatulis has been working closely with our Student Well-Being Team to enhance social and emotional learning, fostering the essential life skills our students need to thrive.

The symposium focused on the five key skills (CASEL Framework) that support fulfilling lives:

  1. Self-awareness - to develop a healthy sense of who you are, and better understand your thoughts and feelings.
  2. Self-management - to manage your thoughts, feelings, and actions toward goals.
  3. Social awareness - to better understand different views and have empathy for others.
  4. Relationship skills - to communicate and connect, problem solve together, and stand up for others.
  5. Responsible decision-making - to make constructive choices, analyze our actions, and find solutions.

The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) has made well-being a central pillar across all its schools, guided by the Student Well-Being Framework. This focus ensures that every school, including ours, prioritizes creating safe, caring, and inclusive environments.

During the event, we had the honour of hearing from Knowledge Keeper Hal Eagletail, Chief Superintendent Joanne Pitman, and Superintendent of School Improvement Dr. Jennifer Turner. A particularly proud moment for our school was when our student delegates and Ms. Tatulis addressed an audience of over 300 students and staff from every CBE high school across Calgary. They showcased the outstanding work our Well-Being Action Team accomplished last year, sharing what a safe and caring school looks like, feels like, and sounds like.

The symposium was designed to empower student voice and promote a culture of well-being. One of the guiding questions posed to students was, “How are you going to be a champion and share responsibility to make change?” Students were encouraged to reflect on their areas of influence and recognize that even small, consistent actions can create meaningful change.

The messages resonated deeply with everyone present, emphasizing the power of showing up, staying curious, using one’s voice, and embracing the courage to let go of what no longer serves us. Our student delegates returned with renewed inspiration and ideas to continue advancing well-being within our school community.

I want to thank our students, teachers, and the CBE for their commitment to this important work. Together, we are nurturing the skills and mindsets our young people need to succeed both in school and in life.

Warm regards,

Anne Kromm Principal
