Good Evening CMHS Parents, Caregivers, Students and Guardians,
Thank you to all of our parents who were able to attend parent conferences. It is always nice to have parents in the building and to tell them how wonderful their children are doing, as well as to discuss what we can do together to support growth in all areas of a student’s development. I recently finished a book titled Partnering with Parents, which explores strategies for strengthening school–family partnerships.
Physical and emotional health, safety, and a sense of belonging were highlighted as key contributors to student success. As a school, we continue to prioritize these areas every day, and we are grateful for the shared commitment we have with families in supporting each young person to thrive.
Our job as educators, every day, is to ensure that all of our students learn. Given the many challenges students face, we also work to provide social and emotional support that not only helps them feel more comfortable in school but also enhances their chances of academic success. There are a few key factors that have a transformative power when put into action, and strong partnerships emerge when parents embrace three essential roles: supporting their children’s learning at home, monitoring attendance and academic progress through PowerSchool, and advocating for their child when necessary.
Parents play an active and collaborative role in education. Through their involvement, educators gain strong partners outside the classroom. Each of our parents brings unique strengths that benefit our school, and I recognize that there is incredible, untapped potential within our school community. Santana, Rothstein, and Bain (2016) emphasize in their book, Partnering With Parents, that when parents learn to effectively support, monitor, and advocate for their children, they not only work more closely with individual teachers but also become advocates for ensuring the school has the resources needed to serve all students well.
Parent involvement and family engagement are critical to student success. When parents and the school develop an authentic partnership, the relationship evolves beyond simple involvement or engagement into true collaboration. This shared responsibility between parents, school, and community is rooted in recognizing the strengths each brings to the partnership. Together, we help shape one of the most important institutions in a democratic society.
A reminder that School Council is on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. in the Learning Commons. We look
forward to seeing many of you there.
