Good Evening Parents, Caregivers, Students and Guardians,
Today in homeroom, our students engaged in an important conversation about serotonin, often referred to as "the happiness hormone." The session aimed to help students understand the role serotonin plays in emotional well-being, mood regulation, and overall mental health.
Students reflected on how they currently access serotonin in their daily lives and discussed the role of technology, such as social media, gaming, and online shopping, in providing short-term serotonin boosts. While these activities can be enjoyable, we also explored how they might have long-term negative effects if relied upon too heavily.
In homeroom groups, students brainstormed healthier ways to naturally boost serotonin, such as:
- Spending time outdoors
- Engaging in creative activities
- Practicing gratitude and mindfulness
- Acts of kindness
- Physical activity
Students were encouraged to take on a challenge over the next week: reduce activities that provide only short-term serotonin boosts and incorporate more sustainable, positive strategies into their routines. We hope you can support these efforts at home by encouraging discussions around healthy habits and well-being.
This week, we also had the honour of welcoming Alex Sarian, President & CEO of Arts Commons and his wife Aliza, to our school. During his visit, he toured our school, attended student performances, and participated in a student question and answer panel discussion. He was deeply impressed by the talent, creativity, and kindness of our students, as well as the strong sense of community within our school. In a message following his visit, he expressed his appreciation for the experience and shared his excitement for potential future collaborations with our school. We are incredibly proud of our students and grateful for opportunities that celebrate their artistic and personal growth.
Thank you for your ongoing support in fostering a positive and thriving school environment for our students.
Sincerely,
Anne Kromm Principal
