Dear Parents, Guardians, Caregivers, and Students

As we look ahead to the start of Semester 2 next Tuesday, I want to take a moment to reflect on the conclusion of Semester 1. Our exam period went smoothly, and I’d like to thank all of our students for their diligence and focus. Exams are what I like to call "game time"—an opportunity for students to showcase the skills and knowledge they’ve worked so hard to develop throughout the semester. Each of our students should feel confident based on the effort and the dedication they demonstrated. The energy and excitement felt in the front foyer every morning made it clear that our students were ready and eager.

Today, our Learning Leaders gathered, before school started, to discuss The Tech Solution by Dr. Shimi K. Kang, a book we read together as part of our professional development. Each Learning Leader shared their reflections and learnings, sparking meaningful conversations about how technology impacts our students' learning and well-being.

We explored a range of topics, including:

  • The effects of hormones like serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin on student behavior and emotional regulation.
  • Ways to strengthen the 5Cs: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, contribution, and creativity.
  • The differences between contact communication (face-to-face) and non-contact communication (digital), and the impact each has on connection and understanding.
  • The importance of self-care and its role in helping students manage the stresses of technology use.
  • The overt and hidden challenges of navigating a digital world.

We also delved into research and insights from experts such as Dr. Nerina Ramlakhan, who highlights how technology can contribute to issues like addiction, burnout, and disrupted sleep patterns, and Dr. David Strayer, who emphasizes the psychological toll of excessive digital stimulation. These discussions were not only thought-provoking but also practical, helping us better understand how to guide our students in developing healthy habits and critical life skills for technology navigation.

As we step into Semester 2, we remain committed to creating an environment that supports student growth, both academically and personally. Thank you for your continued partnership in this journey.

Sincerely,

Anne Kromm Principal
