Good Evening Parents, Caregivers, Students and Guardians,
June is Pride Month, a time to honour the resilience, contributions, and rights of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals.
At Central Memorial High School, and across the Calgary Board of Education (CBE), we are proud to support inclusive, welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe learning environments for all students, staff, and families, every day.
Pride Month is rooted in the historic events of June 1969, when the Stonewall riots in New York City sparked the modern movement for 2SLGBTQ+ rights. It was a pivotal moment that inspired generations to speak out against discrimination and advocate for justice, dignity, and equality.
While significant progress has been made in Canada, Alberta, and Calgary, we recognize that many 2SLGBTQ+ individuals still face challenges. Pride Month serves as a reminder of the importance of ongoing advocacy and the need for compassion, understanding, and allyship in our communities.
This June, we reaffirm our commitment to building a school where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, feels valued and supported. Every student deserves to be seen, heard, and celebrated for who they are.
We all have friends, family members, colleagues, and students who are part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Pride Month is an opportunity to stand with them, to honour their voices, and to continue moving forward, together. Though setbacks still occur around the world and even in our own province, we believe in the power of education, inclusion, and love to create a better future for all.
I personally look forward to attending some of the organized events in Calgary and celebrating and supporting family, friends, and colleagues. Thank you for being part of a community that chooses kindness, respect, and progress.
