Good Evening Parents, Caregivers, Students and Guardians
I want to take a moment to highlight and celebrate the incredible work being done by our Career and Technology Studies (CTS) teachers. Their dedication, creativity, and commitment to student success make Central Memorial feel like a small, vibrant city tucked away within the larger community. From Culinary Arts and Automotive Technology to Welding, Aesthetics, Animation, Pre-Engineering, and beyond, our CTS programs are shaping futures and creating real-world opportunities for our students.
Recently, our School Improvement Superintendents shared a message that beautifully captured the exceptional quality and impact of our CTS programming. They expressed sincere appreciation for a lunch prepared by our Culinary Arts students, highlighting the variety of flavours in the salads and sandwiches, the first-class presentation, and the beautifully finished desserts. As principal, I’ve also experienced just how popular our culinary creations have become—when my neighbours, who check my mail while I’m away, their only request in return is to bring them our signature salmon on cedar planks. The same goes for friends who look after my dogs or when I head out to my trailer—everyone eagerly asks, “When are you bringing that cedar plank salmon again?”
We are truly fortunate at Central Memorial to offer such a rich variety of career, skills and trades programming— everything from oil and tire changes to welding, custom metalwork, and more. As our school community knows, Central really is “a little city tucked away.”
What happens in our CTS classrooms is so much more than learning—it’s life in motion, and it’s preparing our students for real, meaningful futures. Our students are not only developing hands-on skills—they’re excelling. At this year’s Skills Provincials in Edmonton, they brought home an impressive list of awards: Safety Medals in Autobody Repair, 2D Animation, and Baking; Bronze Medals in Autobody Repair; Silver Medals in 3D Animation, Baking, Welding, and Aesthetics; and Gold Medals in 2D Animation, Autobody Repair, Car Painting, Mechanical CADD, and Automotive Technology. Several students are now preparing to represent Alberta at the Skills Canada National Competition—an exciting achievement that speaks volumes about the quality of teaching and learning in these programs.
The importance of career, skills, and trade education cannot be overstated. These programs are not only an investment in our students—they are an investment in our economy and our future. By aligning education with real-world industry needs, we are helping students develop in-demand, high-paying skills that address labour shortages, contribute to economic growth, and open doors to meaningful careers.
Thank you to our CTS teachers for the incredible work you do every day. You are helping build the future, one student at a time.
Have a wonderful long weekend.
