Good Evening Parents, Caregivers, Students and Guardians
Awareness Week Coming Up
As a School Counsellor new to CBE this year, our Principal Ms Kromm asked if I could condense my passionate hallway conversations with administrators and staff about Mental Health/Wellness into something for our school community.
I have been a school counsellor for 25 years now, and have seen youth and their environments evolve with increasing complexity. Providing supports and helping them learn to manage that complexity at school, where they spend the majority of their waking hours, is a significant part of my role. I weave the thread of Mental Health through so much of my daily work: scheduling, talking grad requirements, listening about a heart wrenching first break up, debriefing a suspension to help connect to outside resources, home upheaval, parent exasperation at what to do now, meeting with outside programs to transition them softly back to school. The list goes on.
I also love a good metaphor.
This year, CMHA’s Mental Health Week is all about the practice of masking. Masking is when we hide or suppress something about ourselves from others. We may use a mask to hide emotions, personali-ty traits, behaviours, or symptoms. Trust is pivotal to this. The mask of what youth think you want to see will stay firmly in place until . . . .
When youth finally share the inside struggles and hidden pieces of themselves, allowing them to feel seen, heard, and understood - it can be magical. And if you risk sharing pieces of your inner journey, you might just find that unmasking mental health by talking about it openly improves your own experience and resilience as well.
From May 5 to 11, 2025, join us in celebrating Mental Health Week by exploring the concept of masking and talking about the masks we wear, stigma, and mental health in ways that are supportive and affirming. A Highlight of the week is WEDNESDAY May 7th. HATS ON FOR MENTAL HEALTH. This is a chance for all to physically show the importance of mental health by wearing a hat. Look on our school Instagram for the Staff photo and other best of that day.
*Thank you to CMHA for the resources this week - One is attached here for you.
