Dear Parents, Guardians, Caregivers, and Students
This morning, we gathered as a school to commemorate both Remembrance Day and National Indigenous Veterans Day. This solemn event allowed us to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who served our country.
We were honoured to welcome back Ms. Jeanie Hawes as our piper. With a distinguished career in performance, including playing for Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne, her contribution added a special touch to our assembly.
During our ceremony, we acknowledged the land we gather on, which is part of Treaty Seven. This acknowledgment is a commitment to honouring those who fought for the land we cherish. The haunting music from Schindler's List connected deeply to our themes of loss and resilience, beautifully performed by our PVA Strings Program.
Our PVA Dancers performed the piece titled, "Origins" which was choreographed by Ms. Suzanne Demers, especially for our ceremony today.
We honoured the families of those who have served through the laying of wreaths by various community members including Assistant Principal Brian Cheney, Mr. Peter Boyle, Ms. Susan Forest, Mr. Don Totten and Mr. Evan McDade. Each wreath symbolizes our gratitude and remembrance of the sacrifices made for our safety and freedom.
Mr. Barry Luft sang a folk song, Harvest Train, from the era of the First World War that tells the experiences of young Canadian men who left home by train for months at a stretch to bring in the harvest across the country. When these men left to serve overseas, to fill the gap, students as young as fourteen years old were recruited out of schools to volunteer.
Mr. McDade, a teacher and student alumni shared a personal story of his childhood friend. Sapper Steven Marshall who on October 30th, 2009 while on foot patrol was killed by a roadside bomb while trying to clear them from an area 10 km southwest of Kandahar City in Afghanistan.
Our assembly ended with the Last Post, allowing all of us to reflect in silence on the meaning of peace and the sacrifices that allow us to enjoy our lives today. I encourage everyone to take a moment on Monday, November 11th to remember those who served and reflect on the freedoms we hold dear.
Together, we remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Central Remembers,
Anne Kromm Principal
