Dear Parents, Guardians, Caregivers, and Students
What a privilege it has been to join the Central Memorial Community. Having worked at several other CBE high schools, and in system roles across our district, I can honestly say there is no school quite like this one.
Over the past few months, I have been fortunate to witness countless moments that showcase the remarkable spirit and talent of our students. I had the honor of seeing our choir perform at the Acknowledgment of Land Ceremony back in June, and more recently, our PVA students movingly commemorating those who have served and continue to serve in our Remembrance Day Ceremony. Their performances were nothing short of professional, captivating all who were there to witness them. Our student athletes have also continued to inspire, with impressive performances in cross country, football, and volleyball. It is always heartwarming to see so many families coming out to cheer on their children, and I look forward to being part of even more of these moments as the year unfolds. I have also had the opportunity to experience first-hand the outstanding programming that is available to our students here at Central. This breadth of offerings, combined with the expertise of industry professionals who guide our students, creates meaningful, real-world learning experiences that are truly unparalleled.
While our programs and accomplishments are exceptional, what truly makes Central special are the people. Our teachers and support staff care deeply about our students and one another, building strong working relationships and working tirelessly to deliver high-quality education.
A recent example of this dedication to our work was an opportunity I shared with our Indigenous Success Learning Leader to facilitate Matoomsii’Pookaiks, a day of Indigenous Education-focused professional learning. Hearing our teachers practice the pronunciation of Treaty 7 languages, including place names and greetings, as part of their ongoing efforts to build their knowledge through the creation of meaningful land acknowledgments was a highlight of this work. This commitment to walk forward in a good way to support acts of reconciliation is one example of the important work that happens at Central each and every day.
To me, Central Memorial High School embodies the very best of what public education is all about. Our students come as they are, and we ensure that there is something here for everyone — a place where students can feel connected, challenged, and supported in becoming their very best selves. There is so much to be proud of, and it is my hope that the Fall Break provided opportunities for much-needed rest, moments to recharge, and opportunities to celebrate all that has been accomplished so far.
With gratitude and excitement for the months ahead,
Vanessa Yaschuk
Assistant Principal
