Principal's Message
As we move through another busy week at Central Memorial High School, we are excited to welcome two new staff members to our building: one teacher and one educational assistant. Their addition strengthens our ability to support the incredible complexity of student needs we see in schools today.
Each day, our staff carefully consider the strengths and needs of our students. We look at academic achievement, engagement and readiness, emotional regulation, communication, social interaction, daily living skills, and behaviour as a form of communication that can help us understand unmet needs.
Each of these dimensions influences a student's ability to learn, connect, and experience success.
Our work involves looking for patterns, understanding challenges, and responding to the needs that affect the safe, caring, and inclusive learning environment we strive to create across our campus.
Teachers thoughtfully design meaningful, authentic learning experiences that reflect students' interests and lived experiences, while staff establish classroom structures and routines that support engagement, learning, and positive behaviour.
Above all, we recognize that relationships are foundational to success.
As Dr. Daniel Siegel reminds us in The Power of Showing Up, children benefit enormously from having dependable adults who provide consistency, connection, and emotional support. Even when one parent struggles to be present, another caring and reliable adult can help provide the security a child needs to thrive.
Our social and emotional development is deeply shaped by these relationships. At school, we have an important opportunity to be trusted adults, helping students feel safe, valued, connected, and supported, especially when life feels complicated.
As we head into the festive Halloween weekend, I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy some fun and time with the people who matter most.
Halloween has roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people believed the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred. Communities lit bonfires and wore disguises to protect themselves from wandering spirits, a tradition that has certainly evolved into something a little sweeter!
It was fun to see all the different costumes that staff and students were wearing today. In homeroom, we talked about who would be out and about collecting candies in their neighbourhoods, and it was nice to hear everyone's plans.
I have always enjoyed handing out treats to the little ones who arrive early in the evening, followed by the older kids who swing by later on. There is something special about those simple moments of connection, laughter, and community.
Have a safe, happy, and enjoyable Halloween weekend. Take care of one another, make time for connection, and remember that sometimes the smallest gestures can make the biggest difference in someone's life.
Happy Halloween, Rams!
