Dear Parents, Guardians, Caregivers, and Students

As we continue to enjoy another exciting year of athletic competition at Central Memorial High School, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to our community of parents and guardians. Most of you consistently demonstrate exemplary sportsmanship and provide positive support for our student-athletes. Your encouragement contributes greatly to the growth and development of these young individuals.

That said, I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the expectations outlined by the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association (CSHSAA). While incidents of poor spectator behavior are rare in our community—with only three occurrences in my tenure here—each instance detracts from the positive environment we aim to foster.

Parent/Legal Guardian Code of Conduct

The CSHSAA emphasizes the dignity and worth of every individual, and abusive, harassing, or bullying behavior will not be tolerated. As spectators, parents and guardians are expected to:

  • Set an example of respect: Show respect for players, coaches, spectators, referees, and minor officials.
  • Ease competitive pressure: Focus on supporting the effort and enjoyment of the sport rather than solely on the outcome.
  • Support positively: Cheer for your team rather than against the opposing team.
  • Respect the coach: Recognize their commitment as volunteers providing valuable opportunities for your student-athlete.
  • Follow venue rules: Adhere to site-specific policies, including restrictions on noise-makers, designated smoking areas, and closed-off areas.

High school athletics are about far more than winning. The true value lies in the life skills developed through sports: a sense of belonging, time management, teamwork, resilience, and lifelong friendships. These lessons will benefit our student-athletes well into adulthood.

Ethical Standards for All Members

The CSHSAA Code of Ethics further encourages us to:

  • Promote respect, fairness, and honesty in all interactions.
  • Demonstrate teamwork and leadership on and off the field.
  • Strive for personal growth while maintaining confidentiality and respect for others.

Let’s continue to celebrate the incredible achievements of our students by creating a positive, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone involved.

Thank you for your ongoing support and for modeling the values we hope to instill in our student-athletes. Let’s enjoy the season ahead with the same spirit of sportsmanship and community that makes CMHS so special.

Warm regards, Anne Kromm
