Dear Parents, Guardians, Caregivers, and Students

I'm excited to share an update on the work of our Student Principal Advisory Committee (PAC). This committee plays an important role in amplifying student voices and ensuring their perspectives guide our decision-making processes. Each month, a diverse group of students come together to discuss various topics that help shape the future of our school. These meetings focus on celebrating what is working well, identifying areas for improvement, and ensuring that we provide the best experience for all students at Central Memorial High School.

The committee's first meeting explored the question: "What do you feel is working for you at Central that we should continue?" Here is the summary of what the students shared with administration:

  • Community & Diversity: Many students emphasized how welcoming and inclusive our school is. The Performing and Visual Arts (PVA) program stood out as a place where students find a supportive community. Students highlighted how the school fosters a sense of belonging, where everyone is valued for who they are. Students shared that trying new things feels less daunting because of the inviting atmosphere at Central.
  • Collaboration & Space: Students mentioned the collaboration between departments which strengthens our sense of community and enhances learning. The diversity of learning spaces, like The HUB and the Student Success Centre also supports students in unique ways.
  • Course Options & Programming: The variety of programs CMHS offers, from PVA to Career and Technology (CTC), welding, mechanics, autobody, culinary, cosmetology, pre-engineering, computer science, etc. was celebrated by our PAC students.
  • Student-Teacher Relationships: Students pointed to the importance of strong relationships between students and teachers. Teachers not only care deeply about their subjects but also invest in their students' well-being, offering support both in and outside of academic contexts. Teachers are strong advocates for their homeroom students and are involved in so many co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
  • Leadership & Support: PAC students highlighted how Central Memorial High School supports leadership growth and provides critical support systems. Some students shared personal experiences of receiving the encouragement and motivation needed to pursue their dreams and goals.
  • Flexibility & Opportunities: Students appreciated the flexibility shown by staff in accommodating students involved in multiple activities, such as PVA and Athletics, reflecting how our school values the diverse interests of its students. They also mentioned the welcoming environment created by the artwork displayed throughout the school.

The feedback from this meeting showcases the strong sense of community, support, and opportunities that make Central Memorial High School a special place. We will continue to build on these strengths as we work together to provide a nurturing environment for all our students. Thank you, Chloe, Dita, Mirra, Andrew, Mira, Aurora, Rowan, Ainsley, Noah, Nicholas, Jayden, and Sarah for your input.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving long weekend.
