Dear Parents, Guardians, Caregivers, and Students
This year in homeroom we have been focusing on helping students with their executive functioning - learning how to prioritize and manage the many competing demands on their time and focus. We know that this time of year there is a lot going on, between fall sports playoffs, rehearsals and performances ramping up, completing major projects in their CTS classes, term change and parent teacher conferences - not to mention all the things our amazing students are accomplishing outside of the classroom in their personal lives.
For the past two years we have been running a "Get it Done Day" each semester around this time. This year, "Get It Done Day" will be on Wednesday, October 23. The purpose of Get It Done Day is to provide students an opportunity to complete and submit any work assigned thus far in the semester as well as demonstrate improved understanding of educational outcomes through reassessment. We know that receiving feedback on completed assignments as well as scaffolding skill and content building throughout the semester provides students a foundation required for success in the remainder of the course. Our hope is to continue to shift student focus to learning rather than grading. Prior to these dates, incomplete assignments will be tagged as "missing" with a mark of zero in PowerSchool. This will provide an up to date and accurate mark based on work completed up to that time in the course. Students are encouraged to submit work on time or as close to the deadline as possible if there are extenuating circumstances. After October 23, students may not hand in assignments that were due beforehand in their respective semester. Today in homeroom, students were given an organizer to help plan out their day. This planning should continue Monday and Tuesday of next week with students getting in contact with their teachers about any missing work as well as arranging for tutorial time with their teachers on Get It Done Day.
Teachers will also be communicating with their students on Monday and Tuesday to organize and inform students regarding their expectations for the day. Any student missing an assignment is expected to attend and submit their work on Get It Done Day. Reassessment, enrichment, and tutorial opportunities will be determined by each of the departments and students should communicate with their teachers if they are interested in taking advantage of those opportunities. The deadline for assignment submission will be October 23 at 11:59pm.
In the past, we have collected feedback and information about how students felt regarding the success of this day. Overwhelmingly, students felt that Get It Done Day reduced stress, provided them the breathing space to get caught up, or to improve their knowledge and skills in a particular course. It takes a lot of time and effort to pursue one's passions and Get It Done Day has helped our students strive for excellence in all the areas that we highlight throughout the year. It also provides a chance for students to get caught up or move forward in their learning prior to Parent-Teacher Conferences - which take place on Thursday October 24 and Friday October 25.
Happy Friday, Brian Cheney
Assistant Principal (on behalf of the Central Memorial Administration)
