This week we have observed Truth and Reconciliation Week across the CBE and so I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the importance of this week and its significance for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in Canada. Many misconceptions still exist about residential schools, and it is crucial to address these misconceptions openly and honestly.

Residential schools were not simply institutions for educating Indigenous children. Their deeper purpose was to forcefully assimilate Indigenous cultures into a white, European way of life with the aim of erasing rich and vibrant traditions. These schools were the result of government policies designed to "get rid of the Indian problem" - policies rooted in systemic racism and cultural genocide. To truly grasp the profound impact of residential schools, it is essential to understand their role in Canada's broader efforts at assimilation and the devastating consequences these policies had on Indigenous communities. (Education for Reconciliation: ARPDC)

At Central Memorial High School, we are deeply committed to answering Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action. We believe in fostering intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect within our school community. This involves integrating Indigenous knowledge into our teaching and learning and working to renew respectful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

On a personal note, I started my career teaching in Northern Alberta with the Dene Tha' First Nation in Meander River over thirty years ago. These foundational years in my profession shaped my approach to education in meaningful ways. Those two years taught me valuable lessons that continue to guide my work today. I remain connected with many of the students I taught, and their stories have had a lasting influence on me as an educator.

In addition to Truth and Reconciliation Week, today marks Sisters in Spirit Day, a day dedicated to honouring missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and supporting their loved ones. This day reminds us of the ongoing impacts and legacy of colonialism and the work still to be done.

As we move forward together, I encourage us all to reflect on a few important questions: What impact does this history have on our current efforts to provide meaningful and relevant education to Indigenous students? What are the academic, social, cultural, and emotional implications for Indigenous youth? And most importantly, what is one action each of us can take to promote reconciliation within our own communities?

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership as we continue to journey toward understanding, healing, and reconciliation.

Have a great weekend. Anne Kromm
