I just wanted to follow up on the message Principal Kromm delivered last week and talk a little bit about our Advanced Placement (AP) courses at Central Memorial. AP is designed to provide post-secondary level courses for students who are passionate about subject areas while in high school. There are many benefits to taking an Advanced Placement course, but the main ones are: students are surrounded by like minded learners who are passionate about their subject, students stand out when applying for post-secondary courses, and in many cases, students can earn post-secondary credit and skip introductory courses at university – saving time and money!
We currently offer Advanced Placement in Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Drawing, English Literature and Composition, European History, Music Theory, Physics, and starting next year, Computer Programming. We are the second largest AP program in the CBE and our results have been outstanding over the past three years. Here are some highlights from last year’s exams:
- 92.4% of our students scored a 3 or more (which is what the AP College Board considers a successful score on their exams).
- 60% of our students scored a 4 or more (good for university equivalent credit at many institutions, including U of C, Mount Royal, U of A and U of L).
- In every subject, our average scores were higher than the global average.
- In 5 of our 7 exam subjects last year, our average scores were higher than both the global and Alberta averages.
- In Drawing, 57% of our students scored a 5 out of 5 and our average score was a 4.52 out of 5.
Not all students enrolled in AP courses choose to write the exam, however, we do encourage all our students enrolled in AP to take the exam as it is up to students whether they want to release AP scores to post-secondary institutions. Students can make this choice after they have seen their scores.
I love talking about these scores because it shows just how talented our students really are. We are proud of our students and their abilities in academic, athletic, artistic, and career and technology pursuits. I am in awe every day when I walk through the school and see the amazing things our talented community is able to accomplish while pursuing their passions. Our outstanding AP scores are just another reason I am proud to wear the purple and gold and call myself a Ram!
Enjoy your long weekend,
Brian Cheney (on behalf of the Central Memorial Admin Team)
