Good Evening CMHS Parents, Caregivers, Students and Guardians,
What a great week we have had at Central Memorial High School! It has been wonderful reconnecting with our Grade 11 and 12 students, meeting our Grade 10s, welcoming our international students, and getting to know all of the new additions to our school community. There is something pretty special about the energy in a school when a new year begins, and this week certainly reminded us why we love what we do.
We have also been getting to know our new staff members, and we are excited to welcome our new Assistant Principal, who was hired this week and will be joining us on September 21, if not earlier. We said goodbye to Assistant Principal Brian Cheney last June as he took on an exciting new challenge as the Principal of John Ware School. Mr. Cheney has been an important part of our CMHS community, and while we will certainly miss him, we couldn't be more excited for him and the John Ware community. We know he will do great things!
Our athletics programs have also kicked into gear, and there has been such a wonderful energy in the building because of it. As many of you know, I have an extensive background in athletics, and as much as I love to win, in everything! I believe the most important accomplishments in sport have very little to do with the final score.
Sport teaches us that we can handle hard things. It teaches us how to deal with disappointment, overcome adversity, support others, keep going when things don't go our way, and get back up after we fall.
Adversity develops resilience and personal strength. Those are lessons that stay with us long after the final whistle.
Another icon passed away this week, Gloria Steinem, an incredibly inspirational woman who has influenced generations. One of her quotes that stood out to me was:
“Whenever one person stands up and says, ‘Wait a minute, this is wrong,’ it helps other people do the same.”
Our voice is important. How we choose to use that voice can be incredibly powerful. Sometimes it takes just one person speaking up, asking a question, challenging something, or standing beside someone else to create change.
On that note, Calgary has been celebrating Pride this week. Even with a rainy long weekend ahead, there are many events taking place throughout our city that celebrate diversity, inclusion, visibility, creativity, and belonging. For more than 35 years, Calgary Pride has helped bring communities together, reminding us of the importance of creating spaces where everyone feels seen, valued, and welcome.
That feels like a pretty fitting way to end our first week together. Belonging matters. Our voices matter. And every person in our community matters.
Have an amazing long weekend, Rams! Get some rest, enjoy the rain (or find a way to avoid it @) and spend some time with the people who matter most to you.
